My wife and I spent a bunch of money this year to prepare for the possibility that one or both of us might eventually need long-term nursing or memory care. This has helped to focus my thinking on the cost of preparing for disasters. The win-win is NOT to get your money’s worth.

Ltc insurance is so expensive now. We encourage farmers to think about it, since it could put farm at risk if they deplete assets without it. Did you go with a straight ltc policy or hybrid ltc/life insurance policy?

We have an unusual option in Connecticut. We can join a life care community without moving into it. If we decide to move there later, we're automatically eligible and what we paid counts towards the cost. I think maybe there are five places in the country that offer a plan like that. We thought it made sense for us, and our financial advisor said that the cost compared favorably with LTC insurance. Meanwhile, we can use their facilities, including a nice gym, whenever we want to.

The anti-power-cut generator is much like the anti-rain umbrella, only much more expensive. You can guarantee that your power will never be cut now. Until you're out of gas or the spark plug needs replacing.
